Nanny and Parent Alert: Not All Sunscreens are the Same!

July 13, 2015

Trisha, our very savvy Payroll Manager came in to the office looking like a lobster. The back of her legs were fire engine red! She explained that she was at the beach with her family, applied sunscreen everywhere and still ended up with a terrible sunburn.

How is this possible? She used spray sunscreen. We decided to do some investigating as to why this happened. Our research at CanadianNanny.ca shows that we should be cautious in using this type of sunscreen. Many experts recommend not using spray sunscreen on or around children, especially infants and toddlers. The first reason is when sprayed the child can inhale it through their mouth and noise and it can easily get into their lungs. Be aware of the direction of the wind and spray away from anyone you are with. Secondly, it is recommended that you do not use it as it is a watered down sunscreen and does not provide the protection needed, as it applies unevenly.

If you have nothing else, you can use spray directly into your hands and apply evenly over the body. Reapply the same way when coming out of the water. No one needs to be told that the sun can harm us. We all know that. Spending a little extra money on high quality sunscreen can be money well spent.
