Essence is simple ... "If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, the excitement, and the mystery of the world we live in." --Rachel Carlson I often revisit this quote in all that I do each day both in my times with children and in teaching. It also is a gentle reminder that true happiness and peace often comes with discovering the world just as a child would, and so these words by Rachel Carlson have become close to my heart. My name is Amy Faria and would like to invite you to please feel free to check out my profile for more information on my background and more about my interests. I very much look forward to meeting with you in the near future! As an English Teacher & Social Worker at Living Positive Kenya, located in Ngong Kenya, I taught children from the ages of 4 – 13 years old in the subjects of Math and English who are living positive and effectively created lesson plans and teaching material with little to no resources. Working with children with diverse levels of learning capacities and cultural backgrounds had brought me to learn the importance of actively engaging students through a variety of strategies and approaches that implements their desire and love of learning. Teaching at this level has brought me to understand the significance of understanding the individual student, adapting to their academic needs, and the influence of different cultural dynamics. Other teaching positions included being an occasional supply teacher at Cardinal L. Secondary School and St. Jean Secondary School from 2009-201.... As an Instructor at the Learning Disabilities Association of North Peel, I passionately worked with students from the ages of 7-16 with diverse degrees of learning disabilities and taught essential computer skills so that they were able to better their communication skills both academically, and socially. I was the developer of the program’s curriculum and director of its initiatives and objectives, while efficiently organizing lesson plans that were custom to each individual student and that addressed areas to which they needed to improve. As a one-on-one tutor, I worked with children between the ages of 7-14 in the areas of Mathematics, Science, English and Reading and developed lesson plans according to their grade level to which sequentially nurtured their path to improvement. Working with children with diverse levels of learning capacities had brought me to learn the importance of actively engaging students through a variety of strategies and approaches that implements their desire and love of learning. Teaching at this level has brought me to understand the significance of understanding the individual student and child and adapting to their needs. This position also allowed me to learn the value that technology has in fostering multiple skill development that includes both social and academia based proficiencies. As an Instructor at the Kumon, I worked with students between the ages of 11-17 primarily in the areas of English and Reading and Comprehension. Marking assignments was also an essential component of this position. Kumon Learning Centres take a different approach to learning and taught me that each individual student learns a different way, and so there are many effective strategies and approaches to teaching and child care that can be utilized to benefit the children and enable them to reach their full potential. My passion for community involvement led me to my position as Coach of an Under 10 Boys soccer team in which I provided skill development training on ideas such as respect, teamwork and dedication. Learning how to effectively interact and work with parents in providing the best possible solutions to benefit their child in order to maximize their opportunities for growth was the primary learning experience as a Coach. Dealing with children outside of the classroom setting was also a learning curve in which has prepared me to deal with the changing behavioral patterns that children generally go through as a result of their surrounding environment. Lastly, as a live-in nanny for 4 months and live-out nanny, I cared for newborn twins from the ages of 0-6 years old. This experience is where I developed my passion for childcare and understood the importance of a healthy and secure relationship with children.
