As I’m sure my 3 younger sisters and my little brother would tell you, spending time together doing things like reading a book, painting a picture, doing a puzzle, or kicking a soccer ball around the yard can be a lot of fun! For me, their “big sister”, it’s always been very rewarding to share those kinds of experiences with them. It’s because of the bond that I share with my younger siblings that I know I would also really enjoy spending time with your children.
Not only do I have a lot of experience with the kids in my own family, I’ve also enjoyed helping out with students in athletics. Soccer is a passion of mine and I play quite competitively: this year I’ve earned a position on the VIU Women’s Team, as well as the Nanaimo United Women’s Team. I’ve always had really great coaches in soccer who have given so much to me. I really wanted to give back, so I started volunteering to help with youth soccer, starting with my younger sister’s team and other teams locally. Just recently I have gained a position as an assistant coach for Harbour City’s youth spring soccer league here in Nanaimo. This involvement has taught me about supporting and coaching children as they learn new skills, and has helped me to see myself as a mentor to the young girls, which has been a great leadership experience.
Another experience helping others which gave me a lot of satisfaction is my history of Community Service at Brooks Secondary in my hometown, Powell River. Several times a week I would volunteer in the resource centre helping out with students with developmental disabilities. The support staff told me that I was a really valuable participant in this program, and that they appreciated my positive attitude and openness with the students that shared this class with me. I really love helping out in this way, and feel like I’ve developed really close relationships with all of the students in this program. As a result of this experience, I am looking into a career in special education, providing educational support to students with special needs and varying learning abilities.
Taking the time to teach and mentor younger kids has been really important to me. My parents have always stressed the importance of being a positive role model to my younger siblings, and I’ve tried my best to be a supportive, involved, caring, and helpful older sister. I love being such an influential part of their lives, and I would really appreciate the opportunity to bring my experience with children to a role as a nanny/care-giver.
For all of the reasons above, and many more, I feel like I could be a really good fit for a position working with you. I would love the opportunity to talk with you about what I can bring to your home.
