My name is Emily Roy, I will be 21 in May and am entering my fourth year of Biomedical Science (pre-med) at the University of Guelph. A little bit about my background, I was a competitive gymnast from age 4 to 14 and I fell in love with the sport. I learned much more than just flips and skills; I learned about determination and commitment. The sport provided me with the opportunity to learn teamwork as well as self-motivation. I successfully balanced a strenuous training schedule (about 20 hours a week) with schoolwork. It’s what molded my time management skills and focus that has helped me excel at school. Over time I assumed a leadership role with the younger gymnasts and became a certified coach. I have been coaching since I was 13 and continue to do so to this day. Since moving to Guelph for school I have been a coach at Guelph Saultos Gymnastics club and I absolutely love it. Throughout the year I coach a variety of recreational classes ranging from the Parent & Me where our biggest victory is learning how to conquer stepping over the foam blocks, to acro classes where it’s all about the flips and tumbles. In the summer, camp takes over where we have fun-filled days of crafts, games, park visits, gymnastics, face painting and the kids favourite part, pizza friday. I have experience with a variety of ages, but I normally find myself drawn to the 3-7 year old group. I am always drawn to kids and it is what is pulling me towards considering a career revolving around them. As graduating university approaches, I am striving to apply to medical school where I hope to specialize in either surgery or pediatrics (or possibly a combination of the two). Being around kids comes naturally since I am a big child at heart. I’m humming the lion king more often than not, and have seen Frozen more times than I can count. I am available full time from May 1 to the beginning of September, and from there I could do occasional nights here and there.
