Believe or not some rare nannies that work for the rich and famous command salaries comparable to doctors and other high paid professionals, helping us appreciate how difficult the profession is. What are the qualifications that would enable a super nanny to make $100,000 - 200,000 USD per year?

According to a NYTimes.com article, “A typical high-priced nanny effectively signs her (and they are almost always women) life over to the family she works for… Many clients are paying for the privilege of not having to worry about their child’s care.”

CNN interviews a nanny that makes $120,000/year and an agency that places elite nannies with the ultra wealthy.

What Skills do Six Figure Nannies Possess?

Skills that nannies can use to increase the market value, include: speaking different languages, cooking and any other specialized skills.

According to an agency that specializes in hiring staff for some of the richest people in America some of the requirements they look for include:

  1. Good with kids
  2. Perfect references
  3. No Criminal records
  4. Special skills: languages, driving, familiar with horses etc
  5. Special Education
  6. Self Defense Training
  7. Connections to other well-placed nannies

The specialty skills required and necessary to qualify for prestigious agencies isn’t easy. Joanne Barrow was the recipient of international NANNY OF THE YEAR award in 2013, and the focus of the Forbes.com article Confessions of the Best Nanny in the World. She spoke on the difficulties of her profession…

“People should really validate being a nanny as a professional career. We’re not glorified babysitters. We’re considered an extension of the parent.”

Borrow wasn’t exaggerating. She provided an example; she previously worked for a single parent who was overloaded with work. Joanne found herself making important decisions for the children: including health, education, and entertainment. During her career, she stated that she had salaries over $100,000 and bonuses worth $30,000.

Joanne’s example should help future nannies and parents appreciate how serious the profession is. In the same article, Joanne also mentioned some of her impressive educational qualifications which included: time at the International Butler Academy and a course in children’s etiquette.

Norland College, the world’s poshest nanny school in England, was the focus of the Dailymail.Co.uk article The Making of a Norland Nanny, which highlighted the well-rounded education that makes a qualified super nanny. This includes “traditional skills like sewing and cooking healthy children’s meals… social science, psychology, child health, history and literature.” The nannies also had specialty training which included martial arts and evasive driving courses.

The Bottom Line

It’s important to note that nannies making these kinds of salaries are an exception and only the richest 1% families paying that kind of money for child care. But it is interesting to know that these jobs exist and see what it takes for nannies to command this kind of pay.
