Uh Oh ... Neighbour Stole Your Babysitter?

August 28, 2014

You have a great relationship with your neighbours down the street. The kids play together all the time, and you help each other out whenever you need. You also have a wonderful babysitter you've been using for a while, and the kids adore her. One day, you find out that your wonderful neighbour is also employing your babysitter, and you didn't know! What should you do?

First of all, don't panic. Chances are, your babysitter works for a few different families, and knows how to schedule her time accordingly. While there is sort of an unwritten etiquette with sitter, it can happen by accident. Usually, if someone wants to use the services of your babysitter, they will ask you first, and see if you mind. But, if they used a resource like CanadianNanny.ca to find a babysitter, it is possible they hired your babysitter without making the connection.

There have been fights between families in the past about this, but once the babysitter has agreed to work for both families, there's not much you can really do. Rather than let this get in between your friendship, make sure your sitter is happy working for you and leave it at that. If she is happy being your children's babysitter, she is likely to stay loyal to your family's needs. Meanwhile, both you and your neighbour's children are receiving top-quality care, and the babysitter is familiar with both sets of children.
