My experiences with children and adolescents have contributed to my desires to continue to enrich the lives of children. I have developed the skills to adapt to the diversity among individuals, work in individual and group contexts, adjusting to the needs of others, and also have developed a great sense of what it means to be a great child caretaker. I have enjoyed being a positive role model for children, and wish to continue to witness my enthusiasm play a role in the lives of families. My experiences have taught me that taking care of children must be fostered through various methods, as no two children are alike. I have come to appreciate and recognize the amount of planning, organization, patience, compassion, and dedication involved in being able to take care of children and students. I have also recognized the necessity of structure in the classroom, and the importance of establishing routines that are implemented on a daily basis. Watching the growing and learning process of children unfold has been an extremely fulfilling sense of accomplishment that I wish to experience indefinitely, and I look forward to the opportunity. 1) Tutor-in-the-Classroom for the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic School Board: This has been an amazing opportunity to enhance my experience with children in grades 3-6 at Sts. Peter and Paul Elementary School. As a tutor I worked in the classroom, supporting students in targeted groups in order to close achievement gaps in language, mathematics, and social cues. This position exposed me to effective childcare strategies that help them build problem solving and decision-making skills, but most importantly, this position helped improve my communication skills with children. I loved working with the students and seeing them succeed, thus I kept my position for 2 years. 2) Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Elementary School: I volunteered in a grade 1 class, 2 days a week while completing my BA at McMaster University. I helped children complete their assigned tasks for the day and also helped manage several students with special needs/behavioural issues. The teacher often delegated various preparatory tasks to me, where I assisted in organizing lessons for the day such as photocopying, and preparing learning centers/activities. I provided one-on-one assistance in math and language skills with a group of special needs students and was accessible to the children during their independent work periods. 3) Coaching at Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Elementary School: During the --... school year I was the assistant coach of the junior girls volleyball team with a teacher named Mrs. Callea-Ruiu. I attended all practices and games. This gave me the opportunity to gain an understanding of how to deal with children in this age group, created insight into how they interact with others, and how they respond to direction. It was important to implement strategies when trying to gain and maintain their focus during group instruction, which I believe is important when taking care of more than one child. I also learned from this experience the importance of striking a balance between encouragement, motivation, and discipline when working with children. 4) Corpus Christi Elementary School: I was a volunteer during the --... school year in a grade 2 classroom. During the placement I took on many tasks within the classroom working with the children. I organized the classroom in ways such as assembling bulletin boards, and setting up manipulatives. I often observed the students while working independently to ensure they were following instructions properly. This was a complex class with several behavioural students with varied ability levels. This experience has taught me the importance of acceptance, time management, the importance of using different strategies to deal with behavioural issues, and compassion. 5) Babysitter: I have been babysitting family, friends, and others that I have been referred to, for many years. I started babysitting at a very young age, and have obtained my babysitter training. I have always known that teaching and working with children is something that I want to do for the rest of my life. It is for that reason that I obtained my training so young, and began babysitting for family and friends as soon as possible. I have worked with many different families, and have enjoyed every experience. My responsibilities throughout the years babysitting have been, most importantly, to watch over the children, but also taking care of pets, laundry, cooking, pick-up/drop-off from school, swim class, etc., and housekeeping. 6) Masters of Education at Niagara University: I am currently enrolled in the Masters of Education program, and will be graduating in 2013. My experience with children and adolescents has contributed to my desires to continue to enrich the lives of children. I have recognized the necessity of structure in the classroom, the establishment of routines that are implemented on a daily basis, which all apply to childcare. In order to receive my Masters of Education, I have completed 150 hours of volunteer experience with children. I completed 15 hours at a Head Start Daycare Center, where I was responsible for setting up breakfast and lunch for the children, reading them stories, taking them to the park, and teaching them the importance of dinner table etiquette. Also, I was an educational assistant in a self-contained (special education) classroom, working with children from grades 2-4.
