Messy Kid - What to do?

April 28, 2014

There are many ways to describe my daughters' rooms: Disaster. Mine Field. Pigsty. This morning when I walked through, I could barely see the floor!

Having a messy child is not a new thing. I know there are lots of other parents out there dealing with the same thing as me. The challenge is, what do we do about it?

The experts say that you should just let them have their space, and if it doesn't smell you shouldn't really make an issue of it. So basically, the best way to deal with it is not to deal with it at all. The reasoning behind this is that they will have to suffer the consequences of not being able to find something, and learn to clean up without being told to.

I really believe this is wrong for a child. I want my children to value what they have...not just throw it on the floor. My children are lucky to have the stuff that they have, and to be honest I think they're lucky to have their own room (which I didn't have a kid).

What do you think? Do you feel that kids should be respected to have their own space and you don't discipline if its a mess? Or should it be under your roof...your rules?
