My name is Mariah Walsh. I am currently taking a year off from my studies at Ryerson University for Early Childhood Education. One of the reasons I decided to enroll into that program was that I found I loved teaching children and watching them improve in subjects they once struggled with. Many of the children enrolled in the Homework Club program would come back with their marked assignments and report cards to show me their improvements we assisted with and it was so rewarding. Within the classes I have taken I have learned what activities are best suited for certain age groups of children to target their cognitive thinking skills and prepare them for further education. I also feel like I am great working with children. I have a friendly, positive and outgoing personality that I feel makes it easier for me to relate and make a connection with a child. I also adore animals and would love to promote positive treatment and care for animals in the community and our country. I was a Homework Club Coordinator at the Turner Park Library where children from ages 4-12 would com after school to get additional help with homework. I was in charge of planning activities for when the homework is completed, movie days, setting up and cleaning up, acquiring high school volunteers to help assist the children with their homework and I was there to monitor and help the children with their homework. There would be from 20-55 children on different days with 5-7 high school volunteers. I have done babysitting for neighbors throughout the years with children aged 3-7. Also, when I was in high school for my volunteer hours I was a camp leader at my school during the summer for a Mathsketball Camp for ages 4-12. We would teach the children basic basketball skills, play various games such as dodge ball, parachute, flag football, table tennis etc. but would also have a section dedicated to improving math skills.
