**Make a difference in a child with Autism's Life** Educational Requirements must include Degree in Child Psychology or Education or similar. A combination of training in childcare for children with special needs and related therapies together with experience caring for children with developmental/cognitive difficulties (such as autism) would be considered. Training will be provided, if you wanted to gain experience with ABA and other therapies, you will have a chance here. 20hrs a week (after school) and can flex to 30 hrs a week if you prefer. Caregiver would be responsible for a 7 yr old and 9 yr old child. Other primary responsibilities as follows: After-school childcare Homework assistance Providing guidance/training for special needs child to help improve her communication skills Providing guidance/training for special needs child to help improve her social skills Planning and providing stimulating activities for both children Supper preparation following special diet guidelines Willing to learn how to handle Assistance Guide Dog (training will be provided) The Ideal person will be: Active and enjoy the outdoors, biking, jumping on trampoline, swimming, play catch, walk to parks. Both children are very active so you have to be prepared to keep up with them with no physical issues. Enjoys painting, creative projects, and music and will plan projects for them Have a certain *Spark* that catches the child with special needs attention Firm, knows how to set boundaries and stick to them for the children. This is very important especially for the child with special needs. Calm and able to handle sudden (and loud) outbursts with a quiet voice and calm demeanour (very important). If you are a nervous person when a child has a meltdown or feels embarrassed over a very loud screaming tantrum in public or have the tendency to want to get the child to be quiet quickly as a first reaction, please be honest with yourself. This position may not be a good fit for you. A very calm and very quiet voice is necessary for the child with special needs and this may not always work. You will need to have a laid back *it is what it is* attitude some days. Patience. Willing to learn about Autism and alternative therapies/treatments Last Note Our special needs child is a challenge and the household loud and busy. She is also wonderful, very very intelligent, cheerful and happy, beautiful, and has a smile that absolutely lights up a room and would bring tears to your eyes. Our other child is adorable, intelligent, dramatic, a born leader, and the kindest child with the most giving spirit you will ever meet.
