I'm an
Individual
Hey there, My name is Sophia and I am currently a student at Douglas College in the Early Childhood Education program . I have a deep interest in working with children because I have grown a fascination with child development through out my experiences of volunteering at the B.A.S.E.S program. I strongly believe that we, as adults, can learn many things from children if we truly give them the attention that they thrive in. Unfortunately, we often do not notice the competency of children, and overlook their abilities which can lead to many contributions made by them in our society today. I hope to guide and care for children in a manner which will open their minds to abstract and innovative ways of thinking. Giving the answers to a child does not truly teach them what they need to know. However, inviting them to make explorations of their own will inspire them to learn joyously and build meaningful relationships with their peers and environment. I not only want to be a person who cares for children, but I want to give them opportunities to fully express themselves through various means, and to make rich and meaningful relationships. My most current experience working with children is as a Casual ECE assistant at St.Barnabas Daycare. My responsibilities include assisting ECE’s in their daily routines with the children, empowering children to solve their own problems while being the mediator, supervising children, getting them ready to go outside, and of course interacting with and inviting the children to explore the world around them. I also take part in housekeeping duties such as washing dishes, taking out the garbage, and making sure the environment is safe and clean for learning. During the weekends, I also teach two children how to read and write in Arabic. I prepare engaging and interactive lessons for them and through these lessons; the children and I build relationships with one another. Establishing relationships as I see it, are the most important foundations to set in order for any type of learning to take place. That is because if the child trusts the teacher, and feels a sense of security, they will thrive in their environment without fearing the mistakes they will make along the way.
