Nanny in London, Ontario

I'm an
Individual
*I am not currently looking for a position* Hello! My name is Kenzie. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Childhood and Social Institutions and a Masters of Social Work in Social Justice and Diversity. I bring a unique level of expertise to nannying that is ideal for families looking for someone who integrates social-emotional and moral learning into play and care. I adopt a participatory, evidence-based approach to childcare that prioritizes collaborative learning. I value children's thoughts, feelings, and experiences, using these as a foundation to facilitate academic learning, identity development, and moral growth. I advance social justice values, promote respect for diversity, and engage children in critical thought about social issues. My passion for working with children has shaped both my professional and academic decisions, leading me to pursue educational and caregiving roles with children, an undergraduate degree in childhood studies, and a graduate degree in social work. Volunteering in a kindergarten classroom at Blenheim District Public School afforded me experience balancing learning and play through observing and participating in a play-based learning program. I worked with children in small groups to reinforce academic lessons and use play as a medium for learning. Through my work as a preschool teacher at Oxford Learning Centre and a tutor with London/Middlesex Children’s Aid Society, I helped children embrace challenge as a part of their learning journeys. Building meaningful relationships with children created opportunities to enhance their confidence and self-esteem, which facilitated risk-taking and growth. These positions reinforced the centrality of children's emotional needs to academic, social, and moral development. In nannying positions, I have prioritized children’s voices by creating a space in which they feel comfortable sharing their feelings, ideas, and opinions, and genuinely considering their feedback. I endeavour to establish collaborative relationships with children and their parents through which we develop joint decisions about moral learning, founded in interdisciplinary empirical evidence in education, social work, human rights, and the sociology of childhood. In June 2020, I graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts in Childhood and Social Institutions, an interdisciplinary program centred on children’s rights. I received the Board of Directors' Gold Medal for graduating with the highest average in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. Through my degree, I gained a thorough understanding of the interaction between children’s everyday lives and the processes, structures, and institutions that impact their experiences. Specifically, my research investigated children's moral learning. My work on consent education, "Beyond Yes and No: Practicing Consent in Children's Everyday Lives," has been published in Volume 27 of the Sociological Studies of Children and Youth, "Bringing Children Back into the Family: Relationality, Connectedness, and Home." Another article I wrote in collaboration with sociologist Sam Frankel is currently in press: "In Search of Meaningful Participation: Making Connections Between Emotions and Learning." In September 2021, I began my Masters of Social Work. This program has enhanced my understanding of emotional relationality, child attachment, neuroscience, and social justice. Through my Masters Program, I received the Richard B. Splane Social Policy and Social Innovation Scholarship for engagement in social innovation practice and research, on the basis of academic merit. Working with kids brings me so much joy and fulfillment, especially in a childcare role. I build strong, mutual relationships with kids, who quickly become members of my family. I feel honoured to share in their happiness, love and adventure. Parents have expressed gratitude for my "drive, discipline, and heart" and thanked me for teaching their children "to be strong, independent, and kind." The children I care for say, "she keeps us safe" and "she's the best ever!" I'm looking for a part-time position with a family who is open to my ten-month old joining me as I care for their children. I can provide care in my home or yours. I am available starting in September. I am looking for a family who is fully-vaccinated against COVID-19.
