Thank you for looking at my profile! Nice to meet you, my name is Kay Simon; I am 24, Queer, and a hard worker. I have been working with youth of all ages for most of my life. I'm currently on break from running a day camp here in Toronto, I paused my work on here so that I could focus on making sure that camp could be all that it could be for my kiddos. Looking forward to connecting with families. My first involvement with kids would have to be when I started looking after my siblings when I was 12 years old. After realizing how much I loved working with youth, I started to babysit other children in my building. When I started high school, I learned about a woman's mentorship program and got involved with the organization the YWCA. I became a mentor for young woman and helped them learn about the media’s representation of young women and what it meant to them. Although I don’t currently volunteer the connections that I've made with the staff and the youth remain with me forever! Each summer I try my best to spend a month working at an overnight camp. Connecting with different campers of all ages, backgrounds, and minorities. During the past summer’s I worked at a camp for LGBTQ youth named Rainbow camp. Being Head Counsellor, I spent most of my times mending staff or camper related issues. I also oversaw all of the counsellors making sure that they we’re doing what they needed to do in order to be successful during our camp session which meant; running meetings, doing check ins, and giving our Counsellors their weekly evaluations. I also was made sure that they were all doing what they needed to maintain their mentality and remain in a healthy frame set. While working with campers who may be needing some extra one on one support. Planning surprise parties for cabins, creating a one on one bond with every camper who comes to camp. I also worked for the St. Albans Boys and Girls Club. Working in school with young youth. Implementing and actively planning programming for an after-school program, I work with younger youth at the school that they go to. I maintain a healthy safe space, following the B&GC Covid-19 protocols. While spending and fostering the growth of the youth who go there! Having the chance to work at many camps, it also gave me the opportunity to work with youth of different calibre’s, learning and understand the complexities on how to face different emotions, and experiences firsthand. It causes you to realize that all youth need to prosper is for someone to listen and take their time with them. I've learned by working with people who live, work, and survive every day with their diagnoses sometimes people forget that they're human, that they're kids, and it becomes all that they see. So, I try to always remember that we as humans think and feel differently. That not every kid, every youth or adult: feels, acts and thinks the same way; so why should they be treated like such. I try to teach that we are all a little different and a little weird and that's okay. It is my goal to not only promote happiness, healthy practices in a judgement free zone. But to offer as much understanding that I can give to everyone that I come across. I hope to one day open and run my own mental health facilities, so having the chance to experiences and work in as many environments that actively works towards closing the gap of oppression that not only BIPOC face but also the Queer community.

Recommendations

Kelifa is someone who always works the hardest. There are times I would come home after a long day, and just seeing the love and support that she offers my three kids honestly sends warmth through me. There wasn't a day that she was upset or mad or took her emotions out on my kids. She's someone who can separate her real life emotions from the job at hand. She always made an effort to laugh at every joke made, sing all their songs with them, play with them, and actually enjoy it. I'd recommend her.
