Nanny Job in Edmonton, Alberta

Hello my name is Lauren Nielsen. About my family: We are a family of four with two active little boys Coen age 3 and Theo age 4, and our dog Kira. Theo is in preschool MWF for 2 hours in the afternoon, and will be starting kindergarten in the fall. We are currently potty training Coen and in the fall, he will also be starting preschool T/R for 2 hours in the morning or afternoon. The boys are in a french preschool and Theo will hopefully be in a bilingual kindergarten (not sure which language yet), so if you have a second language that's great! About our life: My husband and I work a lot and rarely take days off. We require care 5 days a week 7:30am - 5:30pm. We often require a flexible end time of up to 30 minutes to accommodate meetings that run late, though a few days a week I am able to do a late start around 8:30am. Currently we split these five 10-hour shifts a week between two wonderful nannies, one of whom is moving on to a position in social work (so happy for her but sad to see her go!). We find sharing the week between two nannies allows both caregivers to remain energized and fresh, and allows for them to coordinate their own days off for travel or appointments without disrupting availability of care. What we are looking for: nanny for Tuesday, Wednesday, and either Monday, Thursday or Friday 7:30am - 5:30pm. Our nanny who is leaving did Tuesday, Wednesday, and alternate Thursdays. We definitely need care for Tuesdays and Wednesdays (our nanny who is staying also nannies for different family Tues/Wed), but which of Mon/Thur/Fri you and she choose to alternate is flexible. Our nannies usually meet on their own together once a month to determine their schedule for the next month and write it on our calendar. We also have a Whatsapp chat that we use to communicate information all four of us need to know. If you happen to also do housecleaning that’s great; occasionally (ex: before hosting family) we have had one nanny come clean on a day that the other would take the kids on an outing. Our location: we are located in the South part of Edmonton in Keheewin, near a bus and train stop. We have a vehicle for the nannies to transport the kids, provided they have their own license and sufficient driving experience. The boys' preschool is not within walking distance, and the bus route is doable but not ideal. Duties: feed the kids breakfast, empty the dishwasher, on some days do one light housekeeping chore with the boys helping you / you supervising them (ex: take out the garbage, kids laundry, vacuum or mop, maybe shovel - the boys love "team projects" ie/chores), feed them lunch, dropoff/pickup Theo to preschool MWF, read books with Coen at nap, and make Simply Supper dinner. (On Mondays also feed the boys supper by 5:30 as we take Theo to swim lessons directly upon arriving home from work). Once or twice a year the nannies stay and we have dinner all together! What the boys love to do: We have a basement with lots of toys, but the boys really love their art desk where they do painting, coloring, playdough, crafts etc. They love to be outside in the backyard, take the dog to the dog park or go for walks in the ravine nearby - they really love being outside in the ravine and are most content there. There are also three outdoor playgrounds within walking distance and two fields for running. The YMCA and Coffee Life are indoor playgrounds within walking distance, Terwillegar rec centre indoor playground and Treehouse are within 10 minute drive. The kids also love John Janzen Nature Centre, Telus World of Science, the zoo, Jurassic Forest, and day camps/classes in the summer. Sometimes they do yoga at home with the nanny and they really love riding bikes in the summer. Start date: preferably sometime between Wednesday February 6 and Monday February 11 depending on your availability. Friday February 1 is our one nanny's last day. My Mom will be staying with us February 1-5 and possibly longer if needed so we have some flexibility with a start day for you. When you start: We do an orientation afternoon where I show you where everything is located in the house, and have you spend your first preschool day with our current nanny to learn the vehicle and where to go/park. We have found it helpful to not require chores or dinner in the first few weeks so you can just focus on spending time and bonding with the boys. Building trust with the boys is priority, and once that has gotten off to a good start then we can start adding in the other responsibilities. Every 6 months or so my husband and I and both nannies meet at a coffee shop to talk about how the boys are developing, consistency between us as their 4 caregivers, and if the schedule and responsibilities are working for everyone on our family team.
