Nanny in Calgary, Alberta

Hey! My name is Ashley, I love being part of the families I work with; bonding and spending time with the kids, being a part of the parenting team, and watching the kids learn and grow! I’ve loved working with kids as long as I can remember; I was 10 years old when I changed my first diaper, and even into my thirties, I still really love childcare.

I live in the Beltline area of Calgary and have a reliable AWD vehicle to get to and from your home. I’m also able to drive your vehicle to take the children to school or other appointments. My first aid is currently out of date but I will upgrade well before my first day. I have criminal record checks and child intervention checks from Alberta & BC (late 2018/early 2019). In Alberta I have my Daycare Assistant Level 1 certificate.

While this is negotiable, I would prefer to work in a situation where I am an employee (and thus paycheques have taxes, ei and cpp deducted). I’m available Monday-Friday at whichever full-time hours work for you, and can also do the occasional evening or weekend. I have done in the past, and really enjoyed doing the occasional overnight, or 24/7 coverage if you need to go out of town for a few days.

I am routine orientated and will work with whatever routine the parents set out for us, within the day, if there are times when the parent hasn’t set out a routine, I will most likely implement a routine for the sake of regularity. For example, the parent may say that around 10am is snack time, 12:30 lunch, and 1pm is nap time. Weather and other events depending, We could plan to walk to a park in the morning around 9am, and after snack time, work on a craft.

I recognise how important communication is with parents, and the fact that parents may miss out on things while they are at work. In the past I’ve set up a share file where any pictures or videos I take on outings, or just every day pictures get uploaded, and the parent can download and have them. At the end of every day, we can debrief for a few minutes while I update you on the days happenings, or we can keep a notebook with notes back and forth to each other. Of course in 2019 there’s always text messages and email to keep up to date.

Nutrition: I completed part of a nutrition management certificate so eating healthy is very important to me. I love cooking, trying new recipes, making comfort food. While I can cook traditional Canadian meals, I also am comfortable cooking gluten free, dairy free, low & sugar free (without chemical replacements). I love experimenting with Indian, Thai & Mexican cooking as well just for fun, and I love sharing my love of cooking with children! I'm open to preparing meals for the children, or having a hot family meal ready for you, with the table set when you get home!

Piano/Music: Before moving to Calgary I taught piano until April 2017 and had around 20 students aged 4-13. Music is a big part of my interaction with children, finding new and old songs to sing, attending musical events. I am also able to help with practising if your children are in lessons (I can also help with Clarinet, and at least guide most other instrument practises). If you have a keyboard, I wouldn’t mind spending some time each day or week teaching or guiding your children on learning piano lessons (included in my regular hourly rate, I wouldn’t charge extra if it’s during work hours. parents would be responsible for purchasing books for their child - my piano rate is generally around $35/hour mileage)

Getting Out There: Exploring the outdoors, going for walks, checking out local events, and scheduled programs at rec centres, trips to the library, driving, or walking, even taking the bus or train to local events and attractions are all things I like to do on my own time, as well as with the kids I work with! I also love reading , crafting and swimming as well!

I have a Cricut craft machine to make craft supplies, and may even bring with me from time to time to work on projects with the kids! It can prepare lots of paper crafts, card making, clothes and coloring pages! I love creating crafts for holidays, and working on them with the kids (I do this all the time when visiting my nieces and nephews!)

Although "screen time" can be a nice treat, a way to distract while preparing meals, or calming down before quiet time, I prefer to spend less time in front of screens, and more time doing planned activities, reading time, etc. Of course I always respect parenting decisions, whatever the screentime rule is in your house, I'm happy to oblige!

I have been a 24/7 live-in nanny which was probably the most challenging position I held; the child was living with her grandmother and I took on the role of Mother to her as her grandma worked nights and slept during the days. I was responsible for everything from school, meals, laundry, cleaning, activities etc. This was also a really rewarding position as I was able to take her camping around Alberta for a few weeks over summer!

My last nanny position was in 2014 which was for a 6 month old & 3 year old, and was full-time. They moved, but before that we spent lots of time walking to the park, spray park, reading books, playing games, and doing crafts! We ended up in the same city years later, and this past school year I started teaching them piano!

In addition to nannying I've also been employed in an afterschool program & a summer program, in which I worked with children ages 5 - 12, focusing on crafts, games, physical activities & creative snacks, A daycare where I was employed as the temporary alternate
program director, supervised 4 staff, and worked with children ages 3 months to 7 years. In both of these positions I helped with start-up, planning, and creating routines & activities.

I'm also open to nanny sharing, $15/hr/family full-time rotating between homes or the parents make arrangements for food/space.
