1) Post a job, and include important details
"Nanny" isn't a very catching job title, and doesn't tell potential nannies what you're looking for. Better job titles give a brief introduction to your job posting, catching the eye of someone looking for what you're offering. We suggest that you include the type of caregiver you need, if the position is part-time, full-time, occasional, etc, and something about your kids. This helps the people not interested in your job to pass over it, leaving only those interested to apply to you. Translation - fewer applications for you to weed through.
- Live out nanny for two infants, 3 days per week
- Full time Spanish speaking nanny for 2 children
- After school babysitter for 5 and 8 year old girls
2) Write a strong job posting
We know that time is sparse for many parents, but taking a few minutes when you post your job can save you a lot of time in the long run. Use full sentences and proper grammar. Caregivers are on alert for potential scam postings, which are usually filled with writing errors. You don't have to be an English major, but make sure you use clear and concise sentences that describe what you're looking for.
3) Include as much detail as you can
When you're looking for a nanny, you should take some time to consider that you truly want in a caregiver, and include that in your posting. If you don't know what you're looking for, it will be that much harder for you to find that perfect person, and you might waste time talking to caregivers who don't fit the bill. Need someone that can swim? Include this in your posting. Expect the nanny to participate in classes with them? Include this in your posting. Make sure you list the days and hours you require care for, and mention if the hours are flexible or not. Many caregivers don't apply to postings if it doesn't look like it will fit their schedule, and you want someone to match your needs.
When writing your posting, try to limit the details to necessary information, and use your list of desired traits for later. If you post too many specifics, you may find no one applies to your posting. You need to find the balance between weeding out those that aren't what you are looking for, and looking for the ideal candidate and not getting enough response.
4) Post a wage
Including the wage, or even a wage range for your position can entice caregivers to apply for your position. Some areas are more competitive than others, and nannies expect to be paid fairly for their work. A wage that matches the type of person you're looking for can help attract the right candidates to your ad.
5) Be realistic in your expectations
The nanny you hire has one objective in her work day - to provide the best level of care she can to keep your child safe and healthy while you're not there. There are many tasks that nannies can and will do during their day, but have realistic expectations for the duties and responsibilities of your nanny. Your nanny may be willing to do light housekeeping, or the occasional load of laundry during the day, but don't expect that she'll be able to complete a full list of housekeeping chores on a daily basis. Any time she spends doing non-child care related duties, and time she is not focusing on her main objective.
