Hello there, my name is Melissa and I have lived in Oakville all my life. I moved to Milton in 2016 and I love it here. I went to Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School and graduated in 2005. I started my experience with children when I was in my senior year of high school, by taking a co-op program, and was at St. Andrews Catholic Elementary School. There I was in a Grade 1 classroom assisting the teacher by grading papers, making photocopies and by assisting the children in their activities. I knew then I wanted to pursue a career in childcare and looked further into it afterwards. Then I went to Sheridan College, where I took Early Childhood Education and I loved the program, I really learned a lot from it. In my studies I studied a range of different curriculum in which children learn from; High Scope, Reggio, Montessori and Theme-Based. I also learned about observing children and coming up with a plan for them to learn in each age group. They also gave us many resources for activities we could use in a daily routine for a child and gave us 3 placements to get use to working in a daycare setting. I graduated the program in 2008 and have my Early Childhood Education. I have had many great experiences with child but some of the ones that have really stood out is when I was in my first co-op placement at college I had a group of Junior Kindergarten children. I did an activity which allowed them to make decisions on their own by letting them choose colors to put into a cup and then they began to pour baking powder and vinegar, allowing them to see the colors the would be making when mixing colors together. Another experience would be the I was a toddler room teacher and I brought in a felt board that I made at the Milton Resource Connection Center to do weather forecasts with them, by telling them stories on the felt board and also allowing them to make stories with them as well. One last experience I have had that really stood out was when I was a fresh new graduate in the field of Early Childhood Education and I had a job as a floater, which allowed me to work in all the classrooms. I would use my planning skills to assist the teachers when they wanted new ideas for activities for the children. One activity they enjoyed doing was in the Preschool Room I gave them an idea to make a fall scrapbook by letting the children grab raw materials outside and gluing them in afterwards. I currently work in a Before & After School program with a Junior Kindergarten group and I absolutely love working with them. I am learning about another age group and adding to more of my current experience. I have learned different ways in dealing with each child by getting to know there interests and building a positive relationship with them. I have been working with the company for 3 years now and I feel like this experience has been great in getting to know more techniques in childcare.
