Hello! How are you doing today? My name is Shauna, I'm a 19 year old Burnaby born and raised student currently attending Langara College. I am enrolled in one Design Theory course as well as one Philosophy course. While I am quite the artsy/deep thinker type, the thought of working with children has always crossed my mind, and still presently does, as I'm trying to discover myself and future plans in today's world. A few personal things: I enjoy drawing, painting, taking photographs and if I can add glitter, the more the better. I'm a very high-energy, enthusiastic person; I tend to get easily excited. However, on the everyday scale, I am quite a calm person. Since I was young, I have always been told by teachers that I was an "empath": I listen to people well and often I can understand and see the bigger picture when people come to me with their problems. One particular, unique experience I have is growing up with my older brother, who is on the Autism spectrum (in particular, Asperger's syndrome). I embrace the little quirks, ideas and often obsessive behavior those with Autism can have. My brother has helped me further widen my compassion and ability to work with people who all have different skills, capabilities, strengths and attitude. The background I have with my brother has made me deeply consider a path in working with those who have special needs. In today's generation, I think we are too "hooked up": We place our kids in front of televisions, iPads, iPods, laptops, phones, so we can have peace of mind. But I am a strong believer against this. We need kids to be outside in nature, playing soccer, engaging their brains in puzzles, doodling on paper; our future generation is at risk of losing a very important part of ourselves--engagement, unless we cut screentime effectively. When your child is in my care, I will do my best to keep them actively present and excited about activities and play. I have formally babysat my cousins (6 and 10 years old) several times through the years. Duties included preparing simple meals, keeping them active (Hip-Hope Abs, anyone?) and making sure they get their naps and homework done before play. As well, though never officially paid, over several summers I would frequent myself over to a family friend's house and end up monitoring and playing with my cousins, who were 1-3 years old at the time, while my aunt was able to get chores done in a single step. In 2011 and 2013, I volunteered as a Camp Leader at Burnaby Village Museum with children age 6-12. Duties included prepping activities for the children; actively engaging in play, talk and FUN with them; and definitely an important aspect was identifying and solving small conflicts with the kids. Different kids would come and go every week and after each day we would sit down and discuss the types of kids we had: those with special needs, social dynamics within the group of kids and ways we could prevent future issues with certain kids. I really appreciated the professionalism and emphasis on this after-camp discussion the staff members gave as it taught me there was a lot more to volunteering for a summer camp than just fun in the sun. I have previously taken a babysitter's course at Bonsor Recreation Centre and have the official certificate to be a licensed babysitter. I believe my experience working as a summer camp leader, being the "favourite older cousin" and genuine joy interacting with young children would make me a great addition to your child's life :)
