Individual
My name is Stephanie, I am 23 years old from Bristol, UK. I recently completed a Master’s degree in Sociology at the University of Bristol, and after leaving my job as a Researcher I have spent the past six months working in a variety of positions around the world. I am now residing in Victoria, BC having received my Canadian work permit and I am looking for a part-time nanny/au-pair position to compliment my role working at the Victoria Women In Need Community Cooperative.
I have a wide range of tutoring and child care experience having taught in several UK schools and abroad. This includes working as a live-in au pair and tutor for 2 months in Hawaii, USA, and volunteering in slum schools in India.
During my undergraduate studies, I volunteered as a Classroom Assistant at St Matthias Pupil Referral Unit (Bristol) working with children who find learning particularly difficult. Initially I found this very challenging- but it was a hugely rewarding experience to watch the pupil’s progress and enjoy taking part in activities I led. At the Referral Unit, I was working closely alongside teachers who guided me in the best teaching methods. This provided me with valuable skills to make students activities both interesting, stimulating and engaging.
During this time, I also worked at Bradley Stoke Community School as an AS Level Sociology Personal Tutor assisting pupils who found Sociology challenging. Before attending the school as a tutor, I completed six, two-hour training sessions provided by the University of the West of England (Bristol). Here, I learnt valuable teaching techniques which provided me with the confidence to lead a class of 8-10 sixteen-year olds for two hours a week. As the students found the subject particularly challenging my main task was to bring enjoyment to the subject and to provide them with extra guidance in how to successfully answer exam questions in order to progress their grades from a D to a C.
I am an outgoing person who is eager to learn and face challenges. A tutor and au pair should be open and flexible to helping with all different aspects of the role, and bring energy and enthusiasm to any task. I regard myself as a creative person having taken both Art GCSE and A-Level; this creativity is something I translate into my teaching. I am a reliable team-player, who also works successfully when having to work to my own initiative.
I have travelled to several different countries including volunteering in India on two occasions. Here I worked for the NGO Thrive Seed who have four slum schools within New Delhi. Whilst living with a host family I taught English and Maths in the schools, whilst also taking the role of project leader for the Women’s Empowerment Project. I have a passion for volunteering and continue my work for the NGO from England by recruiting volunteers and fundraising. When I travel, I like to immerse myself as much as possible in the culture and attempt to learn the language to fully experience the country.
I also worked as a live-in au pair and tutor in Hawaii, USA for 2 months (February- April 2017). Here, I took responsibility for the childcare of two boys (3 and 5 years old) including cooking, housekeeping and playing games. Tutoring involved lesson planning, monitoring their performance and assisting them in academic environments, and providing feedback using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, and build confidence.
In the future, I aim to complete a PhD within the field of Sociology and focus upon a research and lecturing career.
I enjoy running and cycling, and often raise money for several charities such as Great Ormond Street Hospital and Thrive Seed India through completing events such as half marathons- I am currently in the process of training for my first marathon so I love keeping active and healthy! I also enjoy the natural world and photography, including walking, camping and outdoor pursuits.
If you have any questions about me or my experience please do not hesitate to contact me! I am more than happy to provide references and a police check in support of my application. I very much look forward to hearing from you!
