As the eldest of four children, as well as a child of parents who loved to have smaller cousins and friends' children over, I grew accustomed to child rearing from a young age. This care of children continued as I took an officiating babysitting course at the age of 12 and began offering babysitting services within the rural community I grew up in. Having children in my life and looking after them comes as second nature, and the ability to have the "eyes on the back of my head" that parents are known for is an adaptive skill I've learned from many many hours of taking care of children. My parents recognized the benefits for both their children and for themselves that having a nanny would provide. As children, we were given a stable home environment with a caregiver that we trusted and ultimately grew to love. Our parents found flexibility in coordinating their work schedules without the added stress of managing daycare pickup and drop off times. I have always been a high academic achiever, graduating with honours and distinction at both high school and university levels. However, being able to regurgitate information is only secondary to being able to teach the information to other people. As Albert Einstein said, "If you can't explain it to a six-year-old, you don't understand it yourself." To me, being able to help a young person understand something that confused them —whether it be homework or a question about something they observed in their daily life—is a hugely gratifying experience, but also encourages a positive development of the child's abilities. These skills have been remarked upon in many jobs I've had with one previous manager stating that if I ever left the company that she would want to hire me on as a trainer for new employees because I really get people to learn things, not just remember them for a short period of time.
