I believe that the early years are important in the life cycle of brain development and set the base for competence and coping skills that affect learning, behavior and health throughout life. It is important to guide young children in developing a strong sense of self-worth, self-image, value and belonging. My philosophy is based on the knowledge that young children learn by playing and that their play reflects their continuous emotional, social, intellectual, and physical growth. I believe that children feel best about themselves when enabled to exercise their independence. Wherever possible, I allow children to complete tasks on their own. My most important goal is to have each child develop a positive self-image, and an interest and joy in learning. I believe a person’s values and beliefs play a vital role in their interaction with children. I think that children should be treated equally no matter what race, religion, or developmental level they are at. In my experience with children I have noticed that the shyer ones tend to not get as much attention as the more outgoing children. I do not agree with this, when I am in a room with children I always make the effort to include the children that are by themselves playing, or reading a book by themselves. Some children do not yet have the skills to interact with each other and that is no reason for them to be excluded. I believe that children should not be criticized for things that they have not yet learnt. They should all be given an equal opportunity to learn and develop skills. I have run my own dayhome, taking care of children from 12 months - 3 years. Up to 6 children at a time. I have also been a preschool teacher for two years.
