CanadianNanny’s Babysitter Duties Checklist

CanadianNanny’s Babysitter Duties Checklist

Movie babysitters are miracle workers - Mary Poppins, Supernanny, The Babysitters Club - they swoop in and care for your children in a fun but firm manner, putting your mind at ease. But, what can you actually expect your babysitter to do? Your typical babysitter isn't the miracle worker the movies make them out to be, but they're still a vital part of your child care plan!

When imagining what your babysitter will do for you, keep in mind that their #1 job duty is caring for your children and keeping them safe. The more time she spends on household duties, the less attention she has for your children. That being said, there are a number of duties that are included in the typical babysitter role:

  • Getting Children Ready for Nap/Bed
  • Making/Serving Snacks
  • Changing Diapers
  • Preparing Bottles

There are other duties that some babysitters may be willing to do, but should be discussed ahead of time. Some of these duties may incur additional costs as well, such as paying a mileage rate for driving the children. Additionally, some qualifications of the babysitter may mean their wage is higher than someone without these qualifications; for example, someone capable of tutoring may have a higher wage to compensate for their skills.

  • Light Housekeeping
  • Cooking/Meal Prep for the Family
  • Laundry/Ironing
  • Transportation to/from Activities
  • Helping with Homework/Tutoring

We always advise that you discuss the scope of the job with the babysitter at the beginning, and as the relationship continues. Its expected that your needs will adjust as your child ages, and the time of day the care is provided may have an impact on the duties needed.  Accept that some duties aren't going to work for them, and decide whether that's a deal-breaker for you or not.
