Nanny in Calgary

Last summer as well as two summers previous, I worked at Our Lady Queen of Peace Ranch, a not-for-profit camp for at risk youth and youth with mental and physical disabilities; I worked as both a camp counsellor and a facilitator. The age range of children in attendance was 6-16. As a camp counsellor I was responsible for caring for 8-10 children from sun up to sun down for a one week period; I was often accompanied by a partner counsellor but not always. We were responsible for waking the children up in the morning and making sure they were dressed, teeth brushed and packed for the days activities, as well as getting them ready for bed and either singing or reading them to sleep. We were also responsible for taking the children through the days scheduled activities (hiking, swimming, horseback riding, low-ropes course etc.), and for ensuring that we all arrived on time at each meal and each morning flag-pole/anthem singing. Due to the nature of the children that come to our camp (at-risk or low-income youth), counsellors are given packages of their campers information and are asked to review and highlight important factors (allergies, pick-up risks, possible traumas) as well as devise a schedule for the week. We also sleep in a tipi with the children and are responsible for teaching them to keep their sleeping space clean. Throughout the duration of a week we as counsellors spend every moment with our children from when they are dropped off to when they are picked up (aside from our two breaks). As a facilitator I worked closely with the day groups that would come into the camp; many of these children had autism, downs syndrome, FASD, ODD, and various others, all ranging from both very high and very low functioning. It was my responsibility to provide extra support and guidance to the counsellors as well as to act as a positive role model for all of the children attending the camp. I am also a member of a very big family so I have had to care for and work with children of all ages from a very young age. I have a brother who is 15 years younger than I, and I have been able to gain many valuable experiences through him. I received a babysitting certification as well as first aid and cpr multiple times, and have been babysitting since I was 12; I have babysat children in all age ranges (however, mostly ranging from newborn to pre-school years). I absolutely love children of all ages; from infants to early adolescence. Though I have not specifically been a nanny before, my knowledge and experience in working with children is extensive and my outgoing, fun-loving, nurturing and empathetic personality is very well-suited for the position.
