Hello, My name is Kelsey Boone and it would be a privilege for me to work for you. As mentioned in my application I had a great deal of experience working with children. Helping others and working with others brings great joy to my heart, I couldn't imagine a job without working with other people wether it be children, adults, elderly, etc. I have always been known to be a hard working individual, I grew up on a farm and learned the value of hard work at a young age. I have years of experience working with children. Throughout my schooling I've held positions as a day camp director, leisure student and farm hand. I have worked in an after school program for disadvantaged children, here I was able to work with the students and help them get through the challenges that they face. I have just finished up my education degree and have learned a vast amount of strategies on how to work with children of all abilities. I believe that every child is an individual and has the ability to grow to their full potential. If I work for you as a child care provider, I will work with your child to ensure they are able to develop to their full potential. I am passionate and dedicated to helping others, especially children and working for the child’s long-term benefit. I have been fortunate enough to have held a position at the Fredericton Boys and Girls Club. I worked as an after school program leader, with a group of twenty elementary students. The majority of children that attended this after school program were considered to have come from a “disadvantaged” background. I shared responsibility for organizing and running activities for the children. These activities consisted of anything from homework help to recreational activities. The group of children that I worked with could be difficult at times, as there were children with behavioural and personal challenges. However, it is through these difficult situations that I was able to develop my communication, problem solving and conflict resolution skills. No matter the situation, I remained composed and in control. I was aware that my behaviour directly impacted the children’s behaviour, as a result we were learning from each other. Through this experience I was able to realize that we are all different, with different learning styles, and personal barriers to overcome. The children and I needed to work together to overcome these barriers, not only did I help them but they helped me too. It was the tough days that made me realize how much I loved my job and needed to be there for them. Culture and diversity is very important to me, which has been greatly influenced from my experience living in Ghana. I lived in a rural village with a wonderful host family and taught in an elementary school in Ghana, West Africa for two summers. The experience was incredible and has helped me to grow as an individual in more ways than I could have ever imagined. The first summer I attended as a program participant. The second summer I returned as a mentor for the program where I was in charge of nine Canadian students. Throughout both summers, I taught grades two and four. This experience taught me a lot about cultural diversity and the importance of cultural sensitivity. I discovered I was able to adapt to a different culture quite easily. The majority of my students could speak very little English, but I could sense that it was more than that. I came to the realization that many of the students had learning disabilities such as, dyslexia. I took the initiative to begin working with these students after school and during classroom time in order to improve their reading comprehension and language skills. A major limitation for these students was the lack of understanding of the English language as it was not their mother tongue. I made it my mission to learn their language. This was very much a symbiotic learning experience and as a result I was better able to communicate effectively with these students. The outcome was exponential and very rewarding. I was able to see drastic improvements on the overall comprehension levels of individual students. I quickly came to realize how much I love being an educator and mentor. Through this experience I have become very passionate about ensuring that I am aware of the various backgrounds people come from as well as ensuring that everyone is able to succeed regardless of their background. In 2008 I worked as a Recreation and Leisure Student for Summer Street Industries, a workshop program for adults with intellectual disabilities. Through this experience I was able to work with adults of various abilities. I was able to assist in developing personalized programs for the clients to ensure they were able to meet their full potential. Throughout my undergraduate and Education degree I have been able to learn about a vast variety of strategies in order to work with children and adults of various backgrounds and abilities.
