Why We Vaccinate

February 24, 2015

According to Immunize BC, vaccines provide immunity that protect us from diseases without the risk of infection.

Vaccines contain a small amount or part of a germ that causes a specific disease.  This germ has either been killed or weakened, so that it can't give you the disease.  You're body will recognize the germ as the disease, causing your immune system to react by creating antibodies.  If a person comes across the disease in the future, they will be armed with the right antibodies to fight it.  Watch the video below for a better understanding.

Due to being too young or for medical reasons that prevents them, some people cannot be vaccinated. By vaccinating yourself and your children, you lower the risk for these people too.  This is called Heard Immunity.  See video below to learn more.

By vaccinating, we have the opportunity to reduce and eliminate dangerous diseases!  Visit http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/im/assets/pdf/phs-hsp-eng.pdf for a visual statistic.
