The Future of Adult Care?
It’s heartbreaking. Almost 15% of Canadians over the age of 65 suffer from some sort of cognitive impairment, like dementia. It’s hard for families to watch their elders suffer, and many turn to traditional nursing homes to provide care, as such a high level of care is required.
Enter the “Dementia Village” Hogewey, located in the Netherlands. It’s the only facility of its kind in the world, allowing their residents to live a normal life in the village, all under the watchful eye of caregivers. There are almost two caretakers for every resident, and these caregivers staff the village’s grocery store, hair salon, and more. The residents are able to go about their usual business in their confined village without the fear of wandering off, as there is only one way out; a locked door to the outside world.
The staff at the “Village” report that the residents live longer and healthier lives within the confines of Hogewey; they take fewer medications, eat better, and are generally more active than those in traditional nursing homes.
