Seniors and Technology

October 20, 2011

Technology is a wonderful way for seniors to communicate with their family and friends they do not see on a regular basis.  Prehaps seniors could connent with new peers that are also feeling lonely. As a caregiver or family member, here are some ways that you can share your knowledge to allow the senior you care for to stay connected.

  • Basic information about the internet, such as sending email, how to browse, birus scans, etc.
  • Interesting websites, such as news, blogs, community pages, ancestry.ca, etc
  • Webcam usage
  • Social networking sites for seniors, especially Facebook - there is a good chance their children are there posting photos and updates

Seniors are very trustworthy and not aware of the threats of the internet. Give them basic information on how to protect themselves online, such as when to provide their credit card or personal financial details, and what not to open on their computer. Due to their vulnerability, some scams specifically target seniors.
