Minimum Wage is Increasing as an Employer of a Nanny Are You Ready?

September 27, 2016

Some of the challenges in employing a nanny are keeping up with paperwork and ensuring that you are complying with federal and provincial employment standards. There are slight variations to employment laws that get altered over time: the foreign caregiver program, overtime legalities, room and board deductions, workplace safety boards, and minimum wage standards. Keeping up with all of these variances can be a headache if you don’t know what to look for.

This fall, various provinces are updating their minimum wage. As an employer of a caregiver, you need to be in full compliance whether your nanny is paid hourly or a salary.

Here is a breakdown of the changes in each province####
  • British Columbia: $10.85 as of September 15, 2016
  • Alberta: $12.20 as of October 1, 2016*
  • Saskatchewan: $10.72 as of October 1, 2016
  • Ontario: $11.40 as of October 1, 2016
  • Prince Edward Island: $11.00 as of October 1, 2016

*Note in Alberta: the new live-in domestic wage moves from $2,127/month to $2,316/month
