Kids in the Kitchen

July 9, 2009

When kids are home for the summer, they need different actives to break up their time at home. Why not get them in the kitchen to help make their own meals. Keep the recipes fun and simple, and you get a head start on the learning curve of ingredients, measurements, and processes of cooking.

Here are a few ideas of things that kids can make in the kitchen with guidance, that are fun to make, and fun to eat!

Smile Breakfast

Cook up a few slices of bacon, some waffles or pancakes, and some eggs (sunny-side or over works best). Cut up some banana into slices and have some yogurt and orange juice on hand. Then let the kids assemble their face by putting down a waffle/pancake as the face. Decorate the face with two banana eyes, an egg nose, a bacon smile, and yogurt hair. Add a glass of juice and you have a balanced meal that’s fun to make and eat!

Banana Dogs

Coat a hot dog bun with peanut butter and place a whole, peeled banana inside. To sweeten it up a bit, top with jam or honey. Enjoy with a glass of milk for a balanced breakfast that puts a new twist on the ‘dog’ meal for lunch.

Turkey Roll-ups

Take a tortilla and spread some mayonnaise over it. Top with some turkey, some cheese slices, and some shredded lettuce. Roll up the tortilla and cut into 2-inch slices. Mix it up with different meat, cheeses, or flavoured cream cheese for the mayonnaise. Add a juice and some yogurt or fruit to make a complete meal.

Mini Pizzas

Split open an English muffin and spread some pasta or pizza sauce onto it. Top with your favourite pizza toppings, like pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, and grated cheese. Pop it into a microwave or toaster oven for a few minutes until the cheese is melted. Add a glass of milk, some yogurt, and some fruit for a complete and fun meal.

No Bake Cookies

Boil 2 cups of sugar, ½ cup of butter, 3 Tablespoons of cocoa, and ½ cup of milk together, for approximately 2 ½ minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and get the kids to add 1 ½ teaspoon of vanilla and 3 cups of oatmeal. Quickly stir it up until it is well blended. Place a piece of wax paper onto a baking sheet and drop spoonfuls of cookie mixture onto the tray. Refrigerate for about an hour until they are firm. Add to any meal for a sweet treat, or have as a snack after playing outside!

There are lots of great ideas of simple recipes to make that kids love, so get them to help out! Just be sure to supervise at all times, and make sure that an adult handles anything hot. If you have ideas that your kids love, share them here!
