Family Questions

Q: What is CanadianNanny.ca?

CanadianNanny.ca is an online job posting service designed to assist families in Canada to find a nanny, babysitter, adult caregiver, housekeeper, or pet sitter. We are not a placement agency, so we do not hire individuals and place them with families, and we are not a referral agency, so we do not interview and/or screen jobseekers and match families and jobseekers.

Families can post a profile describing their needs, whether it is for a nanny, babysitter, adult caregiver, housekeeper, or pet sitter, or any combination thereof. This profile is created during registration, and is available to jobseekers searching for work in that area. Jobseekers will contact the family directly to apply for the position, and the family is responsible for interviewing and checking the references of the applicants.

With registration, families have access to the database of jobseekers for the type of care they are searching for. Jobseeker profiles contain contact information, experience, qualifications, certificates, and availability; jobseekers have the option to post a resume, references, and photos with their profile.

Q: I am not sure I would like to register without knowing if you will have qualified jobseekers in my area. Can I look at the list of jobseekers before joining?

We provide a test search for your convenience before registering. Search for your postal code to determine how many nannies, babysitters, adult caregivers, housekeepers, and pet sitters we have near you.

You can see some information on each jobseeker to give you an idea of the type of information that is provided by every jobseeker. Once you are registered, more information will be unlocked, including contact information and resume.

Q: How can I determine the experience and quality of care each jobseeker may provide?

Every jobseeker is given the opportunity to provide references on their profile. Feel free to contact their references. Also review the page Tips for Choosing a Nanny, after you have logged in.

Q: Before I pay, can I read feedback on other Parents’ experiences with this site?

Absolutely. To do so, review our Testimonials page.

Q: Does CanadianNanny.ca hold any responsibility over the jobseekers listed on the website?

While we do go to certain measures to ensure that the jobseekers listed on the site are qualified for the positions being offered, we perform no background checks, reference checks, or screening of the members. Within the jobseeker profile, there is an opportunity for the individual to list if they have their Criminal Record Check, First Aid, CPR, resume, and references of past employers for you to check. The decision to hire a jobseeker is of the sole discretion of the family.

If you are concerned about anyone you see listed on the site or that has contacted you through the site, please feel free to let us know. You can send us an email to info@canadiannanny.ca, or use the Report icon  in the profile.

Q: Will I be able to see photos or other such information of jobseekers once I am registered?

Jobseekers are encouraged to post photos, resumes, and references with their profile. However, it is optional, and not all jobseekers have chosen to post this information on their profile. If a jobseeker has not provided this information, you are welcome to discuss the matter with them after contacting them through the site.

We do not allow families to post photos on the site, but you are welcome to send jobseekers your photos after you have had some correspondence with them.

Q: I am looking for a part-time nanny; is that something I can find with your service?

The jobseekers listed with CanadianNanny.ca are available for a wide range of positions, depending on their schedule and needs. In their profiles, you will see that jobseekers have posted their general availability, which you can use as a guide to see if they are available for what you need.

If you are looking for someone part-time, you may want to consider listing this as a nanny and a sitter position, instead of just one or the other. This way, anyone looking to provide child care will be able to access your needs, and will contact you if they wish to apply for your position. By activating both, you will also have access to both nannies and sitters listed on the site. All care types are included with your membership fee.

Q: I am looking for a full-time, live-in nanny AND an occasional babysitter; can I look for both with my one account?

Yes, with your membership to CanadianNanny.ca, you can look for a nanny, babysitter, adult caregiver, housekeeper, and pet caregiver simultaneously, if needed. Because the “Nanny” and “Sitter” profile forms are identical, you will need to describe both positions in the one form, but activating both will give you access to both nannies and sitters, and be seen by nannies and sitters.

Q: Will I have to pay additional fees to search for different types of caregivers after registering?

No. You can search for a nanny, babysitter, adult caregiver, housekeeper, and pet caregiver all for one fee to access the database. There are no additional costs to use the service outside of the subscription fee.

Q: I searched for my city in your site and I see people registered near me that I’m interested in. How do I contact them?

You must be a registered member in order to access the contact information of the jobseekers registered on the site. If you’re not already registered, please register here.

Q: Does Canadiannanny.ca screen the Jobseekers?

CanadianNanny.ca does no screening or interviewing of the jobseekers listed on our website. It is the responsibility of the family to do the interviewing and screening of the individual(s) they are interested in hiring. We recommend that families do a face-to-face interview, contact references (at least two, preferably professional), and check the criminal record check of the individual(s) you are interested in hiring. Jobseeker profiles will list if they have a current criminal record check, and they have the option of listing references and posting a resume online; if it’s not provided, feel free to ask the jobseeker for this information.

Q: What is the cost to use CanadianNanny.ca?

There are three options to subscription to CanadianNanny.ca: a monthly subscription, 3-month term, or a 1 year term. Registration to the service gives you access to all types of jobseekers; nanny, babysitter, adult caregiver, housekeeper, and pet caregiver – one place, one fee.

The monthly subscription is $6.99 plus GST/HST per month with a $44.99 one-time activation fee. This offers the best value, providing ongoing access to the database at any time with no interruption of service. Membership can be cancelled at any time, but the activation fee will be charged to reactivate a cancelled account.

The 3-month membership is $79.99 plus GST/HST. There is no ongoing commitment in this option, and the account is automatically deactivated when the membership expires. At any time during an active membership, members can switch to the monthly membership and the activation fee will be waived, or can choose to extend the membership for a 3-month or 1 year period.

The 1 year membership is $119.99 plus GST/HST. Members choosing this option are eligible to receive 20 AIR MILES® reward miles! There is no ongoing commitment in this option, and the account is automatically deactivated when the membership expires. At any time during an active membership, members can switch to the monthly membership and the activation fee will be waived, or can choose to extend the membership for a 3-month or 1 year period.

Whichever membership is selected, families will be able to post for any type of care needed – nanny, babysitter, adult caregiver, housekeeper, and pet caregiver – and have direct access to the jobseekers looking for that type of work.

Q: Do you offer a trial membership?

No – in order to access the full profiles of the jobseekers registered, you must purchase a subscription. To help you determine if registering is right for you, you can do a Test Search for your city to determine how many jobseekers are registered in your area as a nanny, babysitter, adult caregiver, housekeeper, and pet caregiver.

Q: What is the card verification code that’s asked with my credit card?

The card verification code (CVV) is a 3-digit code on the back of your VISA or MasterCard, or 4-digit code on the back of your American Express used to verify that you have the credit card in your possession. It is located on the back of the card next to your signature.

Q: What are my payment options?

CanadianNanny.ca accepts VISA, MasterCard and American Express online for payment. While we have a completely secure server to handle your private information, and we always encrypt credit card information, payment can be made over the phone or by cheque. Paying online provides instant access to the site, while paying over the phone or by cheque will cause a delay of activation of your account until payment is received. Q: If I don’t find anyone for my position, can I have a refund?

CanadianNanny.ca is a subscription-based service. While our main priority is for you to find someone to suit your needs, we cannot guarantee that you will find the individual that exactly fits your needs.

We encourage you to do a test search for nannies, babysitters, adult caregivers, housekeepers, and pet caregivers before registering to determine the availability in your area. The more jobseekers we have, the more likely it is that you will find someone that meets your needs.

We are committed to assisting you with your search. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Q: If I purchase a 3-month of 1 year membership and cancel it before it expires, will I get some of my money back?

Q: I just registered, but now my plans have changed. Can I put my paid account on “hold”, or “bank” it to be used later?

No, once you have access to the database, we are not able to “bank” or “hold” accounts for use at a later time. Once the membership is purchased, use of the service will commence immediately and expire after the purchased amount of time.

In your account, you do have the ability to deactivate a specific profile. By deactivating a specific profile, you remove your information from that section of the website, and will no longer have access to the jobseeker listings. However, your account will remain active, so you can use other services at any time.

Q: What’s the difference between “Visible” and “Invisible” in my account?

If your profile is currently “visible”, it means that it is available for jobseekers to see, when you have an active profile posted. If your profile is currently “invisible”, it means that nothing in your account is available for jobseekers to see, even if you have an active profile posted – it completely hides you and your information from the view of jobseekers. If you are “invisible”, you will still be able to access jobseekers for the profiles you have active.

Q: What does activate/deactivate for each service type mean?

If you would like to look for a nanny, activate your “nanny” profile and fill in the form, listing your requirements. If you no longer need to have your nanny needs posted, or no longer need to access the listings, “deactivate” your profile, which will remove your posting from the list, as well as remove your access to the jobseeker profiles for that type.

Don’t worry, if you have more than one profile active and deactivate one, you’ll still have access to the others that are active!

Q: What is the difference between “Visible” and an “activated” profile? What is the difference between “Invisible” and a “deactivated” profile?

Your account with CanadianNanny.ca is made up of two main parts – your account (as a whole), and your individual profiles (up to 5). Your account can either be “visible” or “invisible”; your profile(s) can either be “activated” or “deactivated”. At any time, you can have your account visible and no profiles activated, or you can have your profile invisible and have all profiles activated, or any combination thereof.

E.G. I have an active “nanny” and “pet sitter” profile posted, but I don’t want anyone to see my information – I only want to be able to search for these jobseekers. Make your profile “invisible” and your profiles will remain active, but hidden from jobseekers.

Q: What does my profile look like to jobseekers?

When you are logged into your account, on your “Home” page, you will see a drop-down menu with the word “PREVIEW” in it. Click on it to choose which active profile of yours you would like to view. This is exactly what jobseekers will see when they pull up your profile.

Q: How do I search for someone?

There are three search options for you: search by map, advanced search, and search by individual.

Search by Map – Put in the postal code or city you would like to search in, pick the distance you want to search in, and the results will show on a map, showing the approximate location of the jobseeker.

Advanced Search – Doing an advanced search will automatically show you the jobseekers in your area that meet your search criteria. If you want to filter the results more, select different filters and search, or uncheck the filters and search to see more results. Remember – the more criteria you base your search on, the more refined the results will be.

Search by Individual – Enter a first name or last name, or the user ID of the person you are searching for if you know it. The search will return any results that match – an easy way to look for a specific person.

Q: I need someone to care for special needs, how do I narrow the results for this?

If you do an Advanced Search, you can filter the results for Special Needs Experience. This will filter out anyone without special needs experience, then you can review the jobseekers that show in the results for experience with the type of special needs you require care for.

Q: I’m having troubles finding the right person. What can I do?

Review your profile and be sure that you’ve accurately listed what you need. Keep in mind that the more qualifications and requirements you have, the less likely you will find who you are looking for. If you aren’t getting the response you need, try eliminating some of the terms you are flexible on, such as another language. This will open up your position to more jobseekers and you may find the right person this way.

If you ever get stuck or have questions, give us a call at 1-866-221-7918 or send us an email to info@canadiannanny.ca. We’re always happy to help you out!

Q: Why can’t I see the email addresses of the jobseekers? Can’t I send them an email from my own email account?

For each member’s security, your personal email address is not displayed on your profile; this limits the ability for someone to contact you for reasons other than care giving.

All of your messages, sent and received, will be saved in your account on CanadianNanny.ca, so you can easily access your important messages. Messages from jobseekers and important messages from us won't get lost in your inbox or filtered by your junk mail, and the responses to your posting won’t flood your inbox.

If you would like, you are welcome to exchange email addresses with an individual after you make initial contact through the site.

Q: How do I search another area other than the one I’ve entered in my profile?

If you would like to search a different area for jobseekers, you can simply enter the postal code into the search form. On the advanced search, you can change the search area on the results page.

Q: I’m moving and need a nanny in my new city. How do I search for this?

If you are moving and know your new location, we recommend that you enter your new location rather than your current location into your profile. That way, nannies looking for work where you’re moving to will see you. If you don’t know exactly where you’ll be living in your new city, just use any postal code from that city.

Q: Can I find a jobseeker that speaks a language other than English?

Jobseekers can enter any additional languages they can speak in their profile. In your nanny, sitter, or adult care profile, you can indicate what language you are interested in. You cannot search based on language, but you can view the language capabilities of each jobseeker in their profile.

By listing the languages you desire in your profile, jobseekers that meet this qualification will apply, whereas others will skip your posting if they don’t meet your needs. Keep in mind – requiring an additional language can limit your results.

Q: Can I see other postings so I can get an example of what to put in my own?

For the privacy of all our members, you can only see jobseekers in the categories you are searching for, just as jobseekers can only see families in the categories they are available for. To view a sample job description, please choose nanny, sitter, adult care, housekeeper, pet care.

Q: What kind of detail should I provide about special needs care?

If you require care for an individual with special needs, take the time to describe this in detail. When writing your ad, be specific about what the needs are – i.e. autistic, physically disabled, dementia, etc. Often nannies, sitters and caregivers will only respond to special needs ads when they know what the needs are, so they know if they are qualified for the position or not. Try to include a few examples of what the child or adult does during the day, as often the days are filled with extra activities or appointments the nanny, sitter or caregiver should know about.

Q: When I contact a jobseeker, how will they know how to find me?

When you send a message through their profile, the message they receive will include your unique User ID number as well as a link directly to your profile. Feel free to quote your User ID number so they can find you easily – you’ll find it on your Home page, at the top with you name.

Q: What do the icons on the jobseeker profiles mean ?

The heart symbol  allows you to add that member to your saved favourites so you can pull them up easily next time you want to look at their profile.

The block symbol  adds that person to your blocked list. The jobseekers in your blocked list won’t show up the next time you search, and you won’t show up in their search results.

The print symbol  gives you a more printer friendly version of the profile you are looking at, should you wish to have a paper copy.

The symbol  allows you to alert us of a jobseeker on the site that you feel we should know about, or that you feel is inappropriate. You will be able to fill in a form with your comments, and our staff will review and make a decision based on that.

Q: What are my Favourites?

Profiles that you have saved using the heart icon  on their profile are bookmarked here for future reference. You can make notes on each individual, or send a message to each one or all at once.

Below your favourites are the blocked profiles. These jobseekers you have chosen to block and they will not show up in your search results and you will not show up in their search results. On this page, you can manage your blocked profiles, removing them as needed.

Q: How do I change how often I receive notifications of messages from jobseekers to my email?

When you are logged into your account, go to the Account Information page. Here, you can change the frequency of the notifications you receive of messages from jobseekers in your account. Please note – if you choose ‘never’, please login regularly to check your messages as you will not receive any notifications to your email.

Q: How much do nannies typically charge?

Nannies set out their own rates, so it will vary depending on the individual you hire, and their personal experience and qualifications. Generally, we find the rates will fall between $10-16 per hour. Nannies can indicate in their profile their desired wage range, but it is always negotiable.

Some nannies will adjust their rate depending on the hours, the distance they have to travel, the number of children, or the duties involved in the position. Some nannies will want to be paid per hour, whereas others may wish to be paid on a weekly or monthly salary. This is up to you and the nanny to discuss and agree upon.

The wage you pay should be at least minimum wage for your province, and reflect any special qualifications or experience they bring to the position.

Q: How much do sitters typically charge?

Sitters set out their own rates, so it will vary depending on the individual you hire, and their personal experience and qualifications. Generally, we find the rates will fall between $10-16 per hour. Sitters can indicate in their profile their desired wage range, but it is always negotiable.

Some sitters will adjust their rate depending on the hours, the distance they have to travel, the number of children, or the duties involved in the position.

The wage you pay should be at least minimum wage for your province, and reflect any special qualifications or experience they bring to the position.

Q: How much do caregivers typically charge?

The caregivers we have registered have a variety of skills, experience, and qualifications. Due to the wide range of positions that are posted, from companionship to nursing support, the range of wages is quite wide.

Generally, we find the rates will fall between $10-25 per hour, depending on the individual you hire and their skills, experience and qualifications. Adult caregivers can indicate in their profile their desired wage range, but it is always negotiable.

Q: Do I need to sign a contract with my nanny/sitter/caregiver/housekeeper/pet sitter?

It is always a good idea to have a contract that out lines the specific duties the individual will be responsible for, the days/hours they are expected work, what the fees or pay rates are, and if there are different rates for different duties (e.g. housekeeping while children are at school, attending medical appointments, doing additional cleaning duties outside the contract, caring for pets for extended periods of time, etc). By having this in writing, it is clear to all parties what has been agreed to, and can be referenced in the future.

Q: What days of the week are jobseekers available?

Generally speaking, jobseekers are available any and every day of the week. However, each individual may have certian availabilty restrictions, depending on their other time commitments.

Q: Can I have a trial day with the nanny/babysitter/caregiver before making a decision?

We suggest one half day for the potential nanny/babysitter/caregiver to come to the home and spend time with the child/adult. This is both beneficial to the family as well as to the nanny/babysitter/caregiver. It gives the family the chance to see how the nanny/babysitter/caregiver interacts with the child/adult and gives the nanny/babysitter/caregiver the opportunity to decide if he/she would enjoy the position and feel comfortable in your home.

Q: Both me and another person are looking to hire a(n) nanny/sitter/adult caregiver/housekeeper/pet sitter for our separate households, can we share an account?

No. As per the Terms of Use, members are prohibited from sharing their login information from any other individual.

If someone you know is interested in using CanadianNanny.ca, please feel free to refer them to the site, using the Refer a Friend page.

Q: I’ve found someone to fill my position, how do I cancel my subscription?

Monthly Subscription - The monthly subscription can be cancelled at any time.

    • Login to your account and go to "Account Information" to cancel your subscription. Once cancelled, no further charges will be processed and you will have access to your account for the remainder of the month you have paid for.
    • Call us at 1-866-221-7918 or email admin@canadiannanny.ca to have us cancel for you; our customer service representatives are always happy to help. Note: if request received after business hours, request will not be processed until the next buisness day.
    • We will hold your account in our database for 1 year after it expires should you wish to reactivate it. If you choose the monthly subscription, you may be required to pay the $44.99 activation fee again.

3-Month or 1-Year Subscription - If you’d like, you can close your account, but you’ll forfeit your remaining membership time. We recommend deactivating your active profile, or making your account ‘invisible’. Doing so will remove your information from the site, so jobseekers will not be able to contact you about the filled position.

Did you see that we have other services offered? Use your account to find a nanny, babysitter, adult caregiver, housekeeper, or pet sitter. Simply activate the appropriate profile and fill out your needs, and make sure your account is ‘visible’ so people can see it. By activating a new profile, you will post your needs to a different batch of jobseekers, and will have access to their profiles.

Q: What is the “Live-In Caregiver Program”?

The Live-In Caregiver Program is a program set up by Citizens & Immigration Canada to help bring more live-in caregivers to Canada as they are in short supply domestically. The Program enables international citizens to come to Canada and complete work experience to gain Canadian citizenship while working for a host family. Caregivers from other countries use our service to find a host family to sponsor, or employ them during their stay in Canada. If the nanny originates from outside of Canada, they may have specilized training from their home country, such as the NNEB in the United Kingdom. Q: Ok, I am a registered jobseeker. Now what?

  • Search for Jobseekers: Login to your account and click “SEARCH” from the menu. You can search by MAP, ADVANCED SEARCH, or by INDIVIDUAL. We have new jobs posted daily, so login regularly to check for new jobs.
  • Activate other Profiles: Interested in finding different work? CanadianNanny.ca offers, nanny, babysitter, adult care, housekeeper, and pet care work, so login to your account to activate a different profile to expand your search!
  • Update your Profile: Include as much relevant information about yourself as possible. You can post up to two photos, a resume and cover letter, reference information, and your availability for work. Tell the parents why you’re the one they want to hire!
  • Take a Look at the Resources Available to you: CanadianNanny.ca cares about you and wants you to find the best job for you. Click on “RESOURCES” in your account to get tips, find important information, and read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for the site.

Q: How do I find a job?

Now that you’re registered, you have access to the families listed on the site. Go to the Search page after you login and choose the type of work you are looking for (nanny, sitter, adult care, housekeeper, pet care – only those you have registered for are available to search). There are three search methods available to you: search by map, advanced search, search for an individual.

Search by Map – Put in the postal code or city you would like to search in, pick the distance you want to search in, and the results will show on a map, showing the approximate location of the family.

Advanced Search – Doing an advanced search will automatically show you the families in your area that meet your search criteria.

Q: What’s the difference between “Visible” and “Invisible” in my account?

If your profile is currently “visible”, it means that it is available for families to see, when you have an active profile posted.

If you would like to look for nanny work, activate your “nanny” profile and fill in the form, listing your requirements. If you are no longer looking for nanny work, or no longer need to access the listings, “deactivate” your profile, which will remove your posting from the list, as well as remove your access to the family profiles for that type.

E.G. I have an active “nanny” and “pet sitter” profile posted, but I don’t want anyone to see my information – I only want to be able to search for these jobs. Make your profile “invisible” and your profiles will remain active, but hidden from families.

Q: What does my profile look like to families? (not currently installed)

When you are logged into your account, on your “Home” page, you will see a drop-down menu with the word “PREVIEW” in it. Click on it to choose which active profile of yours you would like to view. This is exactly what jobseekers will see when they pull up your profile.

Q: How do I apply for positions listed on your website?

Use the form provided in the family’s profile to contact them about their position. They might have more than one position posted, so mention which one you’re applying for in your message. They’ll get the message with a link to your profile and your User ID number so they can find you easily.

Q: Can I post photos and certificates with my profile for the families to see?

Yes, you can post up to two (2) photos in your profile. These photos should be a simple photo of you; try to cut out anyone else in the photo so it’s clear who you are in the photo. Please do not use photos of children without permission.

You can also post up to two files for parents to view. We recommend that you post your resume; the other file could be a cover letter, a certificate, a reference letter, etc.

Q: I am having trouble uploading my photo(s) and file(s) to my profile. What can I do?

Please email our tech support at support@canadiannanny.ca with your photo(s) and/or file(s) and we can attach them for you. Please be sure that you include a message so we know why you’re sending them, and try to send it through the email address you are registered with CanadianNanny.ca.

Q: When I search for my city/postal code, nothing comes up. What am I doing wrong?

You’re not doing anything wrong. If you search and nothing comes up for you, it means that we don’t have anyone registered in that area right now. If you do an advanced search and it shows there are profiles available but you can’t see any of them, it means that the postings available don’t meet your search criteria. Try unchecking some items from the list on the left and searching again.

If there isn’t anyone registered in your area, don’t fret. Depending on your communication preferences, we will notify you when there is a new job in your area.

Q: Why can’t I see the email addresses of the families? Can’t I send them an email from my own email account?

For each member’s security, your personal email address is not displayed on your profile; this limits the ability for someone to contact you for reasons other than care giving.

All of your messages, sent and received, will be saved in your account on CanadianNanny.ca, so you can easily access your important messages. Messages from families and important messages from us wont’ get lost in your inbox or filtered by your junk mail, and the responses to your posting won’t flood your inbox.

If you would like, you are welcome to exchange email addresses with an individual after you make initial contact through the site.

Q: How do I search another area other than the one I’ve entered in my profile?

If you would like to search a different area for jobs, you can simply enter the city name or postal code, if you know it, into the search form. On the advanced search, you can change the search area on the results page.

Q: What is the purpose of the “Additional Cities” I’ve entered into my profile?

In your profile, you can list up to five (5) additional cities you would like to look for work in. This allows you to expand the areas you will be notified about when new jobs are posted.

Q: I’m moving and want to look for work in my new city. How do I search for this?

If you are moving and know your new location, we recommend that you enter your new location rather than your current location into your profile. That way, you will show up in the search results for the city you are searching for work in. If you don’t know exactly where you’ll be living in your new city, just use any postal code from that city.

Q: When I contact a family, how will they know how to find me?

When you send a message through their profile, the message they receive will include your unique User ID number as well as a link directly to your profile. Feel free to quote your User ID number so they can find you easily – you’ll find it on your Home page, at the top with you name.

Q: What do the icons on the family profiles mean ?

The heart symbol  allows you to add that member to your saved favourites so you can pull them up easily next time you want to look at their profile.

The block symbol  adds that person to your blocked list. The families in your blocked list won’t show up the next time you search, and you won’t show up in their search results.

The print symbol  gives you a more printer friendly version of the profile you are looking at, should you wish to have a paper copy.

The flag symbol  allows you to alert us of a family on the site that you feel we should know about, or that you feel is inappropriate.

These families you have chosen to block and they will not show up in your search results and you will not show up in their search results. On this page, you can manage your blocked profiles, removing them as needed.

Q: How do I change how often I receive job notification emails?

When you are logged into your account, go to the Account Information page. Here, you can change the frequency of the job notifications messages you receive. Please note – if you choose ‘never’, please login regularly to search for work as you will not receive any notifications to your email.

Q: I have found a job, how do I delete my profile?

If you would like to remain a member but you aren’t currently looking for work, you can make your profile invisible or deactivate your profile. Making your profile invisible allows you to search the listings, but you won’t be seen on the family’s search results. Deactivating your profile(s) removes your ability to search for those types of jobs and removes your profile from the search results.

Q: What is the difference between a(n) Au Pair, Nanny, and Mother’s Helper?

An au pair typically has basic childcare experience. An Au pair is often coming to stay with a family for a cultural exchange/childcare work and experience for one year. Au pairs typically don't make a career out of childcare work as nannies do.

Nannies have several years of childcare experience. Nannies are not necessarily seeking a cultural exchange; rather, it is the long-term career-building experience in childcare they are seeking.

A Mothers helper is when a nanny is hired to assist the mother with childcare and household needs. The mother is in the home majority of the time.

Q: What happens if I put my phone number on my profile?

Only registered members can see your personal information in your profile. If you provide your phone number, registered members will see it, and may choose to contact you by phone. Q: Do I need to log out each time I am finished on the site?

If you are using a publicly accessed computer, please use the “Logout” button at the top of the screen so that other people cannot access your account. If you do not logout your session will automatically time out after 25 minutes and you will need to re-login.

Q: Why do I keep reeiving a message that my session has timed out?

For security purposes, the website will automatically log out of your account if it is left inactive for 25 minutes. Therefore, if you walk away from your computer with your account open, it will sign you out so that someone else cannot use your account. As long as you are actively using the site and clicking to different pages every few minutes, it shouldn't log you out. If your session does expire, you can log back into your account to continue.

For more information about the Live-In Caregiver Program, please visit http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/workplaceskills/foreign_workers/index.shtml or http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/caregiver/index.asp. If you require further information about the program, or have questions, please contact someone from the related government department.

Q: What is a nanny?

A nanny is someone who cares for your children on a part-time or full-time basis. Some nannies will be live-in, where they live in your home and work for you during the hours you agree upon with them, whereas others will be live-out, where they live in their own home and come to your home for the shifts agreed upon. Some live-in nannies will be working under the live-in caregiver program; for details, please see the section on the live-in caregiver program. Nannies are sometimes referred to as an au-pair, governess, or full-time babysitter.

Nannies may be highly experienced and have chosen this as their career, or less experienced but with a vested interest in caring for children. Their wage will reflect their experience and capabilities for the position.

Q: What is a babysitter?

A babysitter is someone who cares for your children on an occasional or very part-time basis, such as evenings and weekends, on-call needs, or appointments/date nights, etc. Babysitters live in their own home and come to your home when you schedule them, whether it is a regular shift every week, two weeks or months, or if it is an on call position where you call them when you need a babysitter.

Babysitters may be highly experienced in child care and use this as a means of earning additional income, or are less experienced with an interest in caring for children and/or be taking a program at post-secondary schooling related to care giving, using babysitting as experience. Their wage will reflect their experience and capabilities for the position.

Q: What is a housekeeper?

A housekeeper is someone who comes to your home and performs housekeeping duties for you. Generally, you will direct the housekeeper as to which duties they are required to do, and you and the housekeeper will discuss and agree upon the timing and frequency of their visit.

Q: What is a pet sitter?

A pet sitter is someone that cares for your pet when you are unable to. It could be as frequently as walking your dog once per day while you are at work, to just when you go away without your pet – the options are vast.

Q: Why do I need a pet sitter?

Families with pets may encounter a time when they need to go away and can’t take their pet with them, or their usual person isn’t able to help them. Vacations, workday relief, out-of-town trips, sick pets, pet appointments, and having a new puppy are all reasons you may need some extra hands to help you out while you can’t be home for your pets.
